My mother was a very devout Catholic and was very passionate about being pro-life. I grew up listening to many a lecture on the evils of abortion, and birth control. It is a driving force in the Republican Party today, and I agree with my mother that it is a moral issue. I also agree with Joan Chittister a Benedictine nun.
Who said “I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth.”
We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of what pro-life is.” I believe that the majority of American believe that at some point the fetus is a person, the problem has always been deciding when that fetus deserves legal rights. I think we make a mistake when we tie the politics of abortion to the politics of birth control. We are supposed to be the party of personal freedom, yet there are many in my party who would deprive every woman in this country the right to decide when they want to have children. We have to do more than just make abortions illegal. If we really want to end abortions we need to deal with the reasons why a woman would end her child’s life. Poverty and fear of what they’re bringing a child into are a large part of why women get abortions. The fear that the child is the end of their dreams is part of it. And many just don’t the responsibility. If you really want to end abortions, the first thing we can do is let a mother know that her child will be fed, educated, and housed. We have to create a world where a mother's dreams do not end with the pregnancy. Many Christians today will be outside the abortion clinic, ready offer help for any young woman seeking an abortion. Many will step up and make sure these young women have everything they need to bring a child into the world, but as soon as the child is born so is that help. My fear is tomorrow we make abortions illegal, all that help just disappears. I believe we could make a lot more progress if in trying to make abortions more difficult to get if we gave every woman who doesn’t want to be pregnant, a choice on how she chooses to do that, and the knowledge that her child has a future we would have a lot more success. As a representative, my responsibility is to represent what the majority people in my district. Right now I’m of the belief that on the issues of abortion we are as divided as the rest of the country, but I’m also pretty sure the majority of women in my district don’t want my party messing with their birth control. This is an important issue to many of my voters, so if you have any question, please email them to me at Mcortney2018@gmail.com.
